'Lion' Server Falls Short

The latest Mac server software feels like the end of the road. - The quot;Lion quot; Server may be the last version of the Mac
OS X Server that matters, and, if thats the case, it is a solid operating
system designed for ease of use. But any other goals Apple may have for the
Lion Server arent easily discerned.
Since Apple's exit from the enterprise server ...

New RIM CEO Fires Top Executives, Reports Massive Losses, Kills Future Guidance

When RIM fired its previous team of co-CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, but replaced them with quiet insider Thorsten Heins, there was concern that the latter was too closely wedded to RIM's old guard to be able to deliver the kind of change the company needs. That idea has just been chucked squarely out the window -- for better or...

Tricorder designs go open source: can detect magnetic fields, reveal Trekkies (video)

Open source tricorder design

We're still working on our own plans to grab that $10 million Tricorder X-Prize from Qualcomm and our progress has just been given a shot in the arm from Dr. Peter Jansen, who's released the designs for his tricorders. Making all the specifics open source, his Mark 2 model runs on Linux, while the hardware includes an ARM Atmel microcontroller squeezed into a clam-shell with two OLED touchscreens. Schematics, board layouts, and the firmware is all available at the source below and also includes the initial proof-of-concept device. The tricorders need six AAA to run and include sensors for temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, ambient light, distance and even magnetic fields. Dr. Jansen's hope is to make scientists out of everyone -- including your kids. That is, right after they ask you what Star Trek is.

Sony Mobile launches 'Night of Imagination' with Labrinth

Sony

Not content with hiring acclaimed director Wes Anderson to create a series of TV commercials, Sony's brought in another big name to promote its new Xperia NXT line-up (that's the Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U, in case you were wondering).

Its latest promotion sees Sony Mobile joining forces with British singer-songwriter Labrinth to launch a 'Night of Imagination' event in London's Mayfair district next Wednesday, April 4. Sony and Labrinth promise an exclusive set, including a secret collaboration and "a never-before-seen performance." Coincidentally, Labrinth also has a new album, Electronic Earth, coming out a couple of days before the event.

Sony's giving away tickets to the spectacle, as well as assorted Labrinth-signed goodies away on its official Xperia Facebook and Twitter accounts, so you'll want to head that way if you're interested in getting involved.

We've got the full presser after the break.

Apple Responds to iPad Battery Concerns

When the new iPad says it's 100 percent fully charged, it may actually not be -- at least that's been the word on the web the past few days. This has caused concern among iPad users hoping to get the most out of their device's battery life, and the normally tight-lipped Apple has responded in order to clarify the issue.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Maingear Arms Titan 17 Desktop Replacement with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M GPU

Desktop replacement systems aren't for everyone. They're typically, big, heavy, and comparatively short on battery life, making them the polar opposites of Ultrabooks and other thin and light systems that last for hours on end. So why would anyone want one? For the sheer power, of course! Desktop replacement systems are big and bulky because...

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

iSites -- a zero-code cloud-based 'app creator' -- can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed 'InstantApp', you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven't looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn't a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple's chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done -- it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps -- which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites' new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.
